How to choose the right windshield wipers ?

Whether there are bugs, mud, rain or snow in front of you when you drive, windshield wipers ensure you are driving safely. It's vital to know when to change them as well as choosing the right windshield wipers for your car in order to always stay safe on the road.

Here is some information and tips that will ensure you know everything there is to know about how to take care of your windshield wipers.

When Should You Change Your Windshield Wipers?

Before choosing your blades, it's important to know if and when you need to actually change them. There are certain signs that indicate when they've had their time. Firstly, wiper blades last for approximately 6 to 12 months if used properly. If you write down the date of your purchase, then you can easily gauge when they are due. Unfortunately, sometimes it is easy to forget to write down things since you live a very busy life. So, here are some clues as to when you need to change your blades:

  • The wipers spread water or ice instead of removing it completely which reduces visibility when it rains or snows;
  • The wipers don't reach all the sections of the windshield;
  • They make a strange noise when wiping the windshield;
  • The rubber on the blades is cracked or damaged;
  • The wipers leave an oily residue or scratches on the glass.

What Not to do With Your Windshield Wipers

If your wipers aren't working properly after only a couple of months, you should make sure you are taking proper care of them and that you aren't making any of these common mistakes:

  • You should regularly check their state to make sure there is not dirt or damage, and wipe them often with a clean and humid cloth.
  • Don't turn on your wipers if your windshield is dry, it can scratch the glass and the motor will be used for nothing.
  • If there's been a heavy snowfall, don't use your wipers to remove the snow on the windshield. Remove the snow with a snow brush. The snow is too heavy for the delicate wipers which means you can really damage them if you force them to remove the heavy snow.
  • Don't lift your wipers for long periods of time, it will affect the efficiency of the wiper pressure on the glass.

Choosing the Right Windshield Wipers

  • Rear Guard (for the rear windshield).

1. Multi Fix

The Multi Fix blades are the highest windshield compatibility wipers and the most conventional ones. They can be used for all four seasons. These blades are made with Evodium Tension Strip technology so they blade does not lift during strong winds and has a better adhesions to the windshield.

2. Curve Flex

This is an aerodynamic design you can use during any season. They are very easy to install if you prefer installing them on your own at home. The graphite coated natural rubber helps to even out the downforce of the blade on the windshield.

3. Rear Guard

The Rear Guard wipers are for the windshield at the back of your vehicle. They fit on 99% of all vehicles and they can be used during any season. Like the Curve Flex, they also have an aerodynamic design which means they produce an even distribution of the blade pressure on the windshield.

Whichever type of wiper blade you choose, remember to think of what type of environment you encounter daily. If you drive a lot and can often be caught in extreme weather conditions, then you should probably choose the Curve Flex over the Multi Fix. If you don't drive a lot, are looking for a more economical choice and you live somewhere with the same kind of temperature all year round, then the more conventional ones should fit with your driving style.

Just remember to take good care of your blades and to look for any visual signs that they need to be changed before you drive in unsafe conditions.
