A Good Air Pressure Of Your Tires, It Pays!

A good air pressure of your tires, it pays!

Do you know that the air in the tires supports 95 per cent of a vehicle’s weight? Operating a vehicle with just one tire underinflated by 2 psi can increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption by 2.4 per cent a year. Operating a vehicle with just one tire underinflated by 8 psi can increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption by 4 per cent and can reduce the lifespan of the tire by approximately 15,000 km. More than 75 per cent of motorists in Canada drive with at least one underinflated tire.

Air pressure 101:

  • Due to permeation (when gas penetrates through a solid), it’s important to check your tire pressure at least once a month or before heading out on a long trip.
  • Pyrolysis: Pyrolysis is the chemical changes that occur at high temperatures when there is very little or no oxygen. The reorganization of molecules produces chemical compounds that were not present at first and creates a burst of energy (pushing the molecules apart very quickly, like an atomic explosion). While there are no reported incidents in the automobile industry, this phenomenon is very real and especially common with transport trucks.

In summary, watch regularly the pressure of your tires will save you money. Also read the article "The benefits of nitrogen inflation" to ensure uniform pressure tires. If you need help to get your tire pressure, meet one of our many Point S dealers. Consult our list of dealers here.
